A TRIBUTE TO AUNT RUTH AND HELENA
by
Bonnie Cassevoy Pizzo
I remember the
wonderful smell of Aunt Ruth’s kitchen on any given day of the week.
Her housekeeper, Helena, helped Aunt Ruth turn out
the rolls and roasts for Sunday picnics to Grandpa Rich’s cabin on the
hill, and mountains of cookies, pies, and cakes for munching whenever
you so desired, as well as for after dinner dessert
My favorite
cookie was the orange flavored sour dough with the icing. I recollect it
was one of Doug’s favorites, too, along with his alltime favorite from
Aunt Ruth - fruitcake!
The recipe (orange cookies) has been lost for
years, but, as luck would have it, I hired a young woman last year who
contributed an orange cookie to our department Christmas party. I
literally begged that she bring me the recipe the following day, and she
did. I believe it is THE very same as Helena and Aunt Ruth’s.*
